Blew my rear end! Question on new gears..

Hey all, Ive got an 02 six banger that I blew the pinion and all the inside gears yesterday on the highway.. just blew and shattered the hell out of the inside.. Im looking at this in a positive way like "oh well now I can get new 3.73 gears ive been wanting" but i have a problem. I can get the ring and pinon 3.73 gears from americanmuscle for like $150, but I need the inner gears too. Those smaller ones that fit inside the housing.. Where would I go about buying these? And would stock replacement ones work with a 3.73 ring and pinion? Or would I have to find the inside gears to match 3.73? Thanks in advance

no its just the ring pinion and inside gears.. I dont have a terrible amount of money I lost my job recently and just started working again.. Im thinking just get the spider and side gears from ford but get the 3.73 or 4.10 ring + pinion from americanmuscle.. I dont have $$ for 8.8inch or new axles..

will they fit my v6? and also are they used/new, if used how many miles on them? Is it just the ring & pinion? I was actually considering 4.10's if its reasonable on a v6 automatic... But i might take 3.73's for that price..

red281gt 04-23-2007 10:28 AM

U'll need an 8.8 inch rear axle houseing along with 8.8 differential

1982 mustang 5.0 04-23-2007 10:29 AM

yeah thell fit your car they are for the 7.5" rear end they are used
but they dont have that many miles on them i probably had them on for like 2
months id say like 300miles max on them. and yes its just the ring and pinion
i bought them at American muscle

spike_africa 04-23-2007 10:30 AM

go to ebay and grab a used 7.5" diff off of there and take the spider gears out (thats the name of those gears in the posi you broke). If you do not have a posi and broke the gears in the stock open diff. then its time ot search ebay for a ford 7.5" t-lok.

simbill 04-23-2007 10:35 AM

yeah its not posi its open i think (rear pass drive tire but rear driver side spins when rear pass losses too much traction).. Wouldnt it be easier to just buy the spider gears from form then a 3.73 ring and pinion from americanmuscle?

spike_africa 04-23-2007 10:37 AM

go to ebay search Ford 7.5" posi or T-lok (short for traction lock) you dont wann pay to install gears onto a open diff when you can pay the same amount of money (minus the cost of the posi) and get it installed with the new gears. spinnign one tire sucks, trust me my f150 was like that.

spike_africa 04-23-2007 10:38 AM

Here is one i found on a quick 20sec search on ebay.

simbill 04-23-2007 10:46 AM

hmm thats attractive though.. lol
ill look it over tonite and see what I wanna do, thanks for all the help!

simbill 04-23-2007 12:02 PM

well i just looked into another one he is selling.. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ford-...QQcmdZViewItem Its a great price for the whole diff + 4.10 gears.. Now would that ring & pinion connect right to my driveshaft without any extra parts or modifications?

simbill 04-23-2007 03:23 PM

Well i just ordered that posi 7.5 inch with 4.10 gears..
How much of a diff will I notice driving this car? I know top speed is going to be down but acceleration.. how much faster will the car feel? any improvement on my 0-60?

wnracing 04-23-2007 03:29 PM

Should have a huge change in the 'butt feel' dept under acceleration. As far as a change in top speed, you really shouldn't have any change at all other than finally putting 5th gear into good use..

simbill 04-23-2007 03:30 PM

So it wont be actually too much quicker (maybe 1/2 - 1 second quarter mile time?) just gives it a more torqueier feel lol

Im not sure what the real difference is in the 1/4.. But, yeah it should give you the illusion 'butt feel' of having more torque. And like I said, it will finally make 5th gear useable..

simbill 04-23-2007 03:38 PM

Its automatic.. does that matter? lol

Well, to be honest, I've never ridden in an auto 3.8.. BUT everyone that I have ever spoken with has said that 4:10's have worked wonders in their Auto's. Most 5-spd's go with a 3:73 or 4:10's, but in case of auto's everyone always says 4:10's or nothing! :boink:

simbill 04-23-2007 03:46 PM

you want it to blow? geez, why dont you just skip the damage and replace the parts now? dont risk breaking other things :breakdancesmilie:

would ya let us know what the total cost for everything is after ya get it installed? i'm thinking about putting 3.73's and a t-lock in mine..but i wanna make sure i have enough $$ to do it all.

anothing thing, a few times someone's mentioned swapping out a 8.8 rearend...is it a direct replacement or is there some mod's that will have to be done?

hells yea.

spike_africa 04-24-2007 06:35 AM

If you dont think a half sec or a full seconde drop in the 1/4 mile is alot your nuts. All your going to need is a install kit that i belive you can also grab that off ebay for very cheap or americanmuscle.com sells them too.

simbill 04-24-2007 06:57 AM

Yeah, im going to get the royal purple crap from americanmuscle

well you would need new axles to fit the new diff and i THINK a new driveshaft.. im not sure though, also probably new housing as a 8.8 i doubt would fit inside ma housing for a 7.5.. but other then that I think its fairly easy
