Car Wont Start

My car has been acting funny and not starting every other time I try to start it for the last 3 days. Before today I would let it sit for 5 mins and then try again and it would start right up. The battery gauge is reading and all electronics work, the car turns over it just will not start. Also I dont know if this is related but every once in awhile when coming up to a stop light or stop sign my car will stall.

Any advice? im just hoping its not very expensive............

fuel pump???? ignition problem???? anyone?

theponyfactor 06-06-2007 09:18 AM

gonna guess its not the starter since it stalls. could be something with fuel pump or spark plugs. Dunno, have to wait until the knowledgeabe mustang board members come on.

the stalling is not much of a problem.......it usually stalls at the first stop i come to once i begin driving......if i rev it up 1 or 2 times at the stop right before it stalls the idle will level off and it is fine the rest of the drive......not sure what thats all about its just wierd that it fixes itself with a few revs

If its turning over but not firing its one of 3 things.

Air / Fuel / Spark - thats what it takes to run an engine.

do you have air, do you have fuel, and do you have spark ?

Bwhipple 06-06-2007 09:42 AM

Does it idle well. I would start with simple things. Clean air filter, clean MAF, check spark plugs. Sounds like it just needs a good tune up.

B-rett 06-06-2007 09:45 AM

the idle has never been a problem before,....spark plugs were just replaced about 500 miles ago, so those are most likely good. How can i test if they are sparking though??? air most likely isnt a problem i just cleaned the filter 500 miles ago also but ill check it out..........how can i check if im gettin fuel?

Well i found another way to check if fuel pump is working. In a haynes manual it said put your ear against gas cap with it open and have someone start the car while you listen for a hissing/swirling noise. Well no noise so fuel pump is not working, noticed that one of the lines going from gas cap to gas tank is melted almost completely shut. I think that might be the problem. To lower the gas tank do I have to unhook all of the fuel lines from the tank or can i just empty the tank and unhook the straps?

you have to disconnect it at the filter and the filler neck. there are a couple wires that won't stretch far either.

it's not hard but requires the fuel line disconnect tool... red one IIRC. Available at auto parts stores for like a dollar or so.

stanger00 06-06-2007 03:53 PM

put a jack under the tank and take the straps off and lower it to the ground. just have a extra set of hands to help lift the tank high enough to slide the jack out.

before you do that did you check to see if the fuel pump fuse is blown? buy a cheap pressure gauge and hook it up to your fuel rail and see if your getting fuel pressure. hopefully you got lucky and got a GT with the schrader valve.

stalling while coming to a stop is tune related.....

B-rett 06-06-2007 05:51 PM

Got a pressure gauge.....pretty sure its fuel pump.......spark plugs are brand new and its getting oxygen

I dont get why any of it is broke i only have 30,000 miles, so i dont think fuel pump should be dead yet....im hoping its just the melted line that has made the fuel pump turn off

It could be nothing more then a bad IAC especially if it is stalling when coming to a stop.

To test if a plug is sparking, the usual method is to pull it out, place it on a metallic part of the engine, and then crank the engine looking for a spark. I don't know if this can be done w/ the COP ignition since you may not have enough wire length from the harness but you could hook it up to another car w/ plug wires (no COP) or even a lawn mower if need be.

Can some please tell me where the fuel pressure regulator is on a 1999 gt?

Is it just the chrome looking this on the fuel line inside the engine bay?

B-rett 06-09-2007 03:48 PM

CAR STILL WONT START

There is no fuel getting to the engine......

I have replaced fuel pump
replaced fuel filter
checked the fuel regulator for clogs
the fuel vapor lines coming off the tank are not clogged
there are no fuses blown
the fuel pressure sensor is not the problem
I believe the fuel lines are not clogged
When I turn key into start position I can hear the fuel filter flick on but not even for a second when I push my ear against the gas tank. On my bro's working mustang it turns on and hums for a few seconds. Mine just flicks on and off.

Someone please tell me what is wrong with my stang, Ive been going at it since 9:30 this morning........

did you check the FPDM in the trunk? you know that little red button that pops up after a car accident. hey its something else that keeps the pump from working.....

99-04 mustangs dont have fuel pressure regulators

after you changed the pump did you let the fuel lines prime themselves?

B-rett 06-10-2007 07:51 AM

checked the red button

r3dn3ck 06-10-2007 08:07 AM

mechanic time.

B-rett 06-10-2007 08:40 AM

ya im starting to think that to........i just dont want the bill

B-rett 06-10-2007 11:50 AM

Where is the fuel pump relay switch located on a 1999 mustang gt?

I cant find it anywhere online that will tell me, its not in haynes manual or ford manual

B-rett 06-12-2007 11:39 AM

well it turns out nothing was wrong with car. Someone tried to start my car with my bros key resulting in car thinkin it was being stolen and shutting off the fuel pump....were all good now

stanger00 06-12-2007 11:43 AM

now what azzclown says our keys dont have a chip in them.....

F'ng pats system, sometimes it bites you in your own ass

B-rett 06-12-2007 01:11 PM

I dont know what azzclown said that.....you can see the chip in the top of the key its the little black rectangle
